Site/Non Site review

The review went well for this project, the only criticisms were that the colour grading for videos was a bit too bright and should have been darker to make it more errie, morgan also sugested that the videos posibly should have been on repeat as they were guite short.

DMDN 211 Munted Media review

Watching the munted media videos on friday i felt that i was on the same tract as the rest of the class. I fell the standard of my video was resnoable but my web page could have done a better job of representing my videos themes.

Morgan mage some comments about the audio in my video. he said that the music was maby a bit too driving and not suttle enough and that the radio calls should have been brought foward more to really bring them out and make them more a part of the video insted of just in the background.I agree with him on the radio calls they were a bit quit and could have been incorperated in the video more, weather that be that they were a lot higher volume and the music was quiter, or weather the radio calls were put in a more suitable place of overlapping to create more pannic and confusion. that is what iteration 4 would have been experementing with. more playing with the audio rather than the video.

History 271: essay proposal

I was reading my assigned reading and actually found it quite interesting, so I thought I would like to research it some more and write my thesis on open source software. The website "http://www.opensource.org/" defines open source as,

"Open source is a development method for software that harnesses the power of distributed peer review and transparency of process. The promise of open source is better quality, higher reliability, more flexibility, lower cost, and an end to predatory vendor lock-in."

So basically software that is distributed on the internet for free that has an available source code. This means that the software can be altered and changed to suit a person’s need or to make it run smoother etc, on the condition that the redeveloped software is made available on the internet for other users.

Linus Torvalds developed the operating system Linux and then shocked the computer world by making the source code available for download and encouraged internet users to download it and tweak and modify it to make it a smoother running user friendly operating system.

In my essay I would like to look at open source software and how it is important in the future of computer software. I want to explore and research how having the source code open can allow better developed software and a more user friendly software/operating system. I will look at IBM and why it is supporting open source development as well as Microsoft/Mac and why they are opposed to the idea.

Resources I have found include:
-Geoff Mulgan, Tom Steinberg and Omar Salem’s Wide Open: Open Source Methods and Their Future Potential. 2005
-Perspectives on free and open source software. Edited by Joseph feller
-Free/open source software development. Edited by Stefan Kock.
-www.sourceforge.net is a big contributor to the open source software world and i may contact them with some questions about why they think open source is important and why they are supporting its distribution.

Further research into design and computer periodicals will be essential as that is where a lot of the recent open source information will be found as open source is a fairly new idea. I think a lot of my research will be done through periodicals and recent journals.

Munted Media Video update

I recorded the music for my munted videos on Sunday night. there are an number of guitar tracks and drums.

On the Tuesday studio I imported my "munted music" into Avid media composer and started messing with the clips and cutting them with the music. i got my 3 iterations using this. My First iteration was basically just cut and paste clips over the music to see how it would go. on my second attempt i wondered what it would be like to use some of the sounds of the original video clips, the radio calls etc, and sort of use them as lyrics to the munted music. So in the last half of clip 2 there are various radio calls and peoples voices over the guitar and drum tracks. I found that this was quite successful so im my 3rd iteration I really wanted to incorporate the distress calls and operators voices throuout the entire film. I experemented with the place ment of the clips and their sound tracks, and what sound tracks should be left out or unapproriate to the video.

I think my 3 iteration was the most sucesful at incorperating the music, video, and audio into the munted video.

211 studio

Started editing clips in Avid today. learning the basics of cutting clips and making sequences etc. Spent most of the studio time cutting up my downloaded footage into smaller usable pieces.
i have yet to find any open source music that i like for the project so i may write and record some myself. I' m thinking something dramatic and heavy would go well with the footage, and having that up and the distress calls/ operator voices down a bi so they are audible but not dominating.

The short video lecture about copy right and its position in todays society was rather interesting. the man argued that its not copy right infringement when someone takes the content and reworks it and is creative with it.

DMDN 211 project 1

Started downloading videos from archive.org. I sort of focused on terrorism like the attack on the twin towers in new york. That was my initial idea for the video, terrorism and the "things it munts" such as the buildings, cars, people etc. so far I've really only got 9/11 footage. need to search archive.org, for car bomb footage, suicide bombers, cluster bombs or anything related to the genre.

Terrorism i think is munted in a couple of ways. First the people behind it have pretty munted and twisted minds, second if it is successful, then it physically mints its surroundings, be it person, building, car, tree, dog, etc. And third refers mainly to how the American president George Bush reacted to the attacks on the twin towers. A lot of people didn't agree to the war in Iraq, and think it has "munted" things in Iraq, and in America.
